Ongoing Development

July 8, 2022

The engineering team at Google Fonts and The Font Bureau have completed the First Release of the Australian Handwriting Fonts, just in time for Quarter Three of the school year.

This release includes the basic print styles taught from pre-school to year 2 (in some States up to year 3).

Included with the initial release of NSW ACT Font is a trial of Beginner Cursive and the decorative variation Small Caps. Included with QLD Font is a trial of the decorative variation Small Caps.

We rely on feedback from educators to ensure these trials are up to Department of Education standards before proceeding with implementation of Precursive and Small Caps for the remaining States.

What’s In a Name?

Font family names are often copyrighted by the designer however, we have done our best to use names that you are already familiar with – while respecting other designer’s rights.

At the computer level, the file naming convention we have used goes as follows (NSW ACT Font, for example):

PrefixState/sFamiliar NameWeightFileType
EduNSW ACTFoundationRegularttf
EduNSW ACTFoundationMediumttf
EduNSW ACTFoundationSemi Boldttf
EduNSW ACTFoundationBoldttf
ie:
EduNSWACTFoundation-Regular.ttf
EduNSWACTFoundation-Medium.ttf
EduNSWACTFoundation-SemiBold.ttf
EduNSWACTFoundation-Bold.ttf

At the user level, the font family groups all the font files together under a single selection within your word processor. The family name is stored within the files. So, when you view the font within your font application, it will group the files by the family name, something like this:
